With M-Files Web Companion, users can use M-Files Web to edit documents in desktop applications instead of relying on browser-only editing. It is supported on Microsoft Windows and macOS.

By default, M-Files Web Companion supports these file types:

DOCX HTML
DOC MP3
XLSX MP4
XLS BMP
PPT ACCDB
PPTX VSDX
TXT PNG
JPG RTF
JPEG ODT
SVG ODS
PDF ODP

M-Files Web Companion supports files smaller than 200 MB.

How users install it: From M-Files Web, a user selects their initials in the top-right corner and chooses Install M-Files Web Companion. If that option isn’t visible, the vault admin needs to install it for the user, or the vault is configured to hide the option.

How admins deploy it at scale: For environments where many computers need the application at once, M-Files provides a distributed installation method using Group Policy Objects (GPO) in Windows.

After installation, the operating system prompts users to allow network access for the app. When allowed, M-Files Web Companion runs and shows its icon in the notification area. See the full step-by-step guide in the Documentation table further below.

Admin aid: As a vault admin, you can use Advanced Vault Settings in M-Files Admin to control how M-Files Web Companion behaves, under Configuration > Client > Web Companion.

To use M-Files Web Companion with OAuth 2.0, the system admin must also configure authentication. See Setting Up OAuth 2.0 for M-Files Web, M-Files Web Companion, and Web-Based Add-Ins in the Documentation table further below.

Note: M-Files Web Companion is included with M-Files Web at no additional cost. No separate license or purchase is required.
